How Long Can US Citizens Stay in the Schengen Zone?
US citizens can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period without a visa. The clock is cumulative across all Schengen countries — it doesn't reset by moving between them.
At a glance
- Visa-free stay
- 90 days — within any rolling 180-day period, across the whole Schengen Area, no visa required
- Overstay risk
- Fines, entry bans, deportation — even a few days over the limit can trigger penalties
- Latvia bilateral extension
- Up to 90 additional days — only while remaining inside Latvian territory without leaving — does not extend Schengen-wide travel
- ETIAS travel authorization
- Not yet required — launch date not yet confirmed as of 2026; expect a multi-month grace period once it does start
Eligibility
- With at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Zone. Required
- For your stay. Required
- Covering medical expenses and emergencies for the duration of your stay. Required
- Tickets showing you'll leave before your allowance expires. Required
How it works
Track your cumulative Schengen days
Across every visit and every Schengen country — the 90-day allowance is calculated on a single rolling 180-day window, not per country.
Plan any Latvia-specific extension carefully
If you want the extra 90 days under the US-Latvia bilateral agreement, you must remain physically inside Latvia for that whole period.
Apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit
If you want to stay longer than the Schengen allowance permits, before your 90 days run out.
Watch for ETIAS
A pre-travel authorization system for visa-exempt travelers that hasn't launched yet — monitor official EU sources as the rollout approaches.
Why work with BIZ TRP
Day-counting across multiple countries and multiple trips is where most accidental overstays happen — we help you plan around it before it becomes a problem.
- Day-count guidance. We help you track your cumulative Schengen days across countries and trips.
- Long-stay route planning. We identify which residence or long-stay visa route fits before your 90 days expire.
- Staying current. We track ETIAS and Schengen rule changes as they roll out, so your travel plans don't get caught out by a date that moved.
Common questions
Does the 90 days reset when I leave and re-enter?
No — the 90-day allowance is calculated on a rolling 180-day window across the entire Schengen Area, not per country or per visit. Leaving and re-entering doesn't reset the clock.
Can I really stay in Latvia for 180 days?
Yes, under a bilateral US-Latvia visa waiver agreement — but only if you remain inside Latvian territory for the additional 90 days. Leaving Latvia during that period, even to visit another Schengen country, breaks the arrangement's terms.
What is ETIAS and do I need it yet?
Not yet. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization system for visa-exempt travelers that hadn't launched as of 2026, with no confirmed start date. Once it does launch, a phased rollout with a grace period is planned before it's strictly enforced.
