EDS Registration in Latvia: Complete Guide

EDS is Latvia's Electronic Declaration System, run by the State Revenue Service (VID) — the mandatory platform for all electronic communication with tax authorities, including VAT returns, payroll declarations, and corporate tax filings. Since 2015, paper submissions are generally not accepted.

BIZ TRP confirms exactly what your business needs before you commit to anything.

Who needs this

Registration process

  1. Choose your authentication method

e-paraksts (smart card), Smart-ID, eParaksts mobile, bank authorization, or EU eID — bank authorization is simplest if you already have Latvian internet banking.

  2. Obtain the necessary hardware or software

A smart card reader and certificate for e-paraksts, or just an app download for Smart-ID/eParaksts mobile.

  3. Complete initial registration

Via your bank's "Tax Administration" section (simplest), directly through the VID EDS portal, or in person at a VID customer service center.

  4. Set up company-user relationships

The administrator (usually the director) registers first, then adds users with appropriate access rights — full, declaration-submission, or view-only.

  5. Test and verify access

Confirm you can access VAT, payroll, corporate tax, and annual report modules before your first deadline.

Why work with BIZ TRP

EDS is genuinely mandatory, not optional — and the technical and linguistic complexity (limited English support, e-signature setup, multi-user access rights) trips up a lot of foreign-owned companies right when their first tax deadline is approaching.

Common questions

Can I use EDS from outside Latvia?

Yes — with a proper e-signature and internet connection, access works worldwide.

What if I lose my e-signature card?

Block it immediately through your provider and obtain a replacement, typically within 2–3 days.

Can foreign companies use EDS?

Yes — EU eID can work if compatible with the system; otherwise you'll need a Latvian e-signature, often with help from a local representative.
