Norway's Digital Nomad Route: the Independent Contractor Visa

What the Independent Contractor Visa actually requires
This is a business-formation-adjacent residence permit, not a simple remote-work registration — Norway wants to see that your business is real, viable, and needs you physically present. A strong business plan and clear proof of your professional qualifications (vocational training, a degree, or substantial relevant experience) both matter as much as your financial means.
Renewal and permanent residence. The permit runs up to 2 years and is renewable as long as you continue to meet the eligibility criteria. After 3 years of continuous residence, you may become eligible for permanent residency. Permit holders are restricted to working within their own business — taking up other employment in Norway isn't permitted on this route.

Common questions
Is this the same as a "digital nomad visa"?
Not exactly — Norway doesn't have a dedicated digital nomad visa. The Independent Contractor Visa is the closest equivalent: a residence permit for self-employed professionals running their own sole proprietorship, rather than a general remote-work registration.
Can I work for a company as well as my own business?
No — permit holders are restricted to working within their own business. Taking up other employment in Norway isn't permitted on this route.
What qualifications do I need?
You need to demonstrate skilled-worker qualifications: a completed vocational training program of at least three years, a university or university college degree, or special qualifications built through long professional experience, possibly combined with courses.
